NFL Network hosts already forgetting how dominant Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is in September
Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY Sports

Hot takes for the Kansas City Chiefs' 2024 schedule are already popping off.

There's no disputing that the Chiefs have a gauntlet for a schedule this coming season, but that has been the case for the last several years. The results of playing in six consecutive AFC Championship games and winning the last two Super Bowls are proof that they can handle consistently playing the best that the NFL has to offer.

The Chiefs have been particularly dominant during the month of September. Since Patrick Mahomes took over as the starting quarterback in 2018, Kansas City is 15-4 in games played during September. Mahomes dropped the first season opener of his career last year to the Detroit Lions, but that can largely be chalked up to the all the dropped passes by K.C. receivers, looking at you in particular Kadarius Toney.

During the NFL Schedule Release special, NFL Network hosts Michael Robinson and Maurice Jones-Drew were tasked with predicting the Chiefs' win-loss record for the 2024 season. Despite K.C.'s history of success in September during the Mahomes era, they bafflingly predicted the Chiefs to start 1-3.

No matter how difficult the schedule, a 1-3 start for the Chiefs just seems very unlikely. MJD makes the case that the Chiefs usually heat up in November and December, however K.C. has five losses during those months in the last two years. Michael Robinson seemingly doesn't believe the Chiefs can beat any good teams.

Mahomes' worst September was a 2-2 record, with both losses coming by a combined seven points. Coach Andy Reid is known for showing some new wrinkles early in the season and setting the tone for the year.

Starting the year off against the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinatti Bengals will certainly be challenging, but the Chiefs have too many elite veteran players and coaches that understand the importance of avoiding an 0-2 start.

As for their next two opponents, the Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Chargers could be formidable teams in 2024, but both have undergone drastic changes to their rosters and coaching staffs.

The Chiefs will likely be favored in both of those games and should win each of them if they are playing to the best of their abilities. To MJD and Robinson's credit, they have K.C. finishing with 12 wins, which is right around where they normally wind up.
